Barnfield College Fly the flag for Floristry!

23 Jun 2010

The 23rd June was the third VQ Day, held in London – a celebration of the people who gain vocational qualifications every year. By working with partner organisations across the UK, VQ Day will raise the stature and demonstrate the benefits of practical and vocational qualifications to future learners, employers, opinion formers and the wider public. For more information visit www.vqday.org

What is VQ Day?

Last year 4 million people gained a vocational qualification and millions more will achieve similar success this year. This vocational achievement is celebrated every June on VQ Day, a date fast becoming a fixture in the education calendar.

What were the requirements?

VQ Day is a unique opportunity to showcase your subject to a key audience of opinion formers, employers and Government Ministers. The proposals were to be:
·         Creative, interactive, engaging and imaginative
·         Highlight the career opportunities that the course can provide
·         Capture the public’s imagination
·         Encourage new learners to enrol on a vocational course

Barnfield College, in Luton were chosen for the 2nd year running to ‘show case’ the floristry industry.

19 colleges and learning provider’s took part in this celebration, each representing a different skill. The floristry team wanted to create designs that were both innovative and promote florists as skilled designers. Led by tutors, Caroline Bracey, Sara Whitehouse and Lisa Cope, level 3 Diploma students put on a ‘promenade style’ demonstration, throughout the whole event. The theme behind the planning and construction of the designs, was to ‘create public awareness’, by using
·         Sustainable plant material
·         British grown and seasonal materials
·         And promoting the many health benefits of a range of plant materials to the environment
