If you are creative with a passion for flowers and plants a floristry qualification could be the start of a dream career. You will learn how to identify and care for fresh flowers and foliage, create floral displays and build a professional portfolio of your designs.

Bath College was awarded a gold medal and the prize for best college floristry exhibit at the 2016 Chelsea Flower Show. One of our Level 3 students took part in the Young Florist of the Year competition and achieved a bronze medal.

FULL TIME COURSES

FLORISTRY TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE LEVEL 2

Course Overview

If you like to interact with others, be creative and are keen to develop practical, technical floristry skills then look no further. You will learn how to look after different plants, but there’s more to floristry than just flowers. For florists to be successful, they need to understand their tools, environment and the finishing touches that really make a difference. You will learn how the floristry business operates, develop customer service skills and understand the design principles and skills needed to apply these designs to the floristry creations.

What are the entry requirements?

  • 4 GCSEs at grade D/3 including Maths and English
  • You will need to obtain a weekly voluntary work placement in a florist or garden centre to run alongside your course

Level 2 Technical Certificate in Floristry.

PART TIME COURSES

FLORISTRY CERTIFICATE LEVEL 2

Course Overview

If you would like a career in or have a keen interest in floristry, this intensive part-time course is ideal for you. New topics will be discussed and fresh designs made each week.

What topics are covered?

  • Introduction to Art and Design for Florists including Elements and Principles of Design
  • Colour relationships including colour wheel and colour harmonies and their association with special dates
  • Cultures and symbolism. Plan, prepare and construct floral arrangements using different mediums and containers, following Elements and Principles of Design
  • Plan, prepare and construct simple wedding designs including wiring, taping and construction techniques to create buttonholes, corsages, headdresses, wired and hand tied bouquets and novelties
  • Flower and foliage identifications. Costing up and costing down, using wholesale invoices to calculate retail prices, VAT etc.

Who is the course aimed at?

Candidates should show an interest in floristry and demonstrate a desire to work in the industry.

What are the entry requirements?

Entry to the course is subject to a telephone interview with the course tutor. You should also have a good standard of literacy and numeracy.

What qualifications will I gain?

Level 2 City & Guilds Certificate in Floristry.

FLORISTRY CERTIFICATE LEVEL 3

Course Overview

This part-time Level 3 Floristry course will follow on from the Level 2 Certificate in Floristry or is relevant for those who have equivalent extensive industry knowledge. The course will inspire you to create innovative and contemporary designs to mirror the requirements of the industry. You will be working at a more senior level within the floristry industry applying your practical skills.

What topics are covered?

The Creative Design Process for Florists, including the exploration of art and design principles and sources of inspiration, the use of methods to support the creative design process, design, culture, emotion, techniques and botany. Assemble and Evaluate Diverse Hand Tied Floristry Designs, including tying and binding techniques, construction of a range of diverse tied designs, packaging and care, costing and evaluation of designs. Plan, Assemble and Evaluate Diverse Floral Designs for Weddings, including a range of traditional and non-traditional construction methods of a variety of designs for bride, bridesmaids and body adornments, packaging and care and costing and evaluation.

Who is the course aimed at?

Those who wish to develop the skills learnt in Level 2 Certificate. People who want a career progression into or within the floristry industry. Those who don’t have access to work-based qualifications and those who wish to start their own floristry business.

What are the entry requirements?

You must have a level 2 floristry qualification. Entry to the course is subject to a telephone interview with the course tutor. Candidates should show an interest in floristry and demonstrate a desire to work in the industry. You should also have a good standard of literacy and numeracy.

What qualifications will I gain?

Level 3 City & Guilds Certificate in Floristry.

How will I learn?

Theory sessions with handouts and explanations of all relevant information, practical step by step activities, completion of written assignments and portfolios, questioning and checking learning, stretch and challenge, fun questionnaires and quizzes etc.

How will I be assessed?

Practical portfolios and written assignments.

FLORISTRY FOR BEGINNERS

Course Overview

A fun introduction to floristry skills. You will use a variety of flowers, foliage and sundries to create some simple designs for you to take home each week, including a hand tied bouquet and arrangements in floral foam. Flowers, tools and equipment provided.

What topics are covered?

Basic skills; conditioning flowers; arranging in oasis; hand tied; gift wrap.

Who is the course aimed at?

Anyone who has an interest in floristry.

How will I learn?

Practical demonstrations and theory.
